A first-car road trip is a rite of passage for so many teenagers and twenty-somethings. In this week’s article, I’m talking car clubs. But put aside your thoughts of crusty car clubs and driving gloves. It’s time to discover a new generation of clubs with the potential to help you recapture heady, youthful days!
Road Trips & Car Clubs – Recapturing Youth
Why do we go on road trips?
I remember flicking through the pages of Auto Trader searching with childlike excitement in the lead up to Christmas. I would circle my dream cars and eagerly show my father. He, in turn, would quickly remind me of the cars I should be looking at for a first car. The reality of having choices narrowed by engine size and insurance quotes was frustrating.
That said, it somehow didn’t matter as your first car represented something much bigger. It meant freedom. I was searching for the perfect vessel in which I could travel the world, or at least that’s how it felt. I can fondly remember planning my first road trip with friends. Funds were low, but spirits were high. We would plaster an AA map with post-it notes offering scribbled advise from my father of known roads to enjoy. Then, with a route marked with orange high-lighter, we hit the road—a group of friends in search of a real adventure.
When I look back at those early road trips, it’s clear what made them so special. It was the experience, the memories and everything that went with it. Cars breaking down and the roadside repairs. The terrible hotel that wasn’t open when we arrived and the plucky campsite that took us in for the night. What seemed like a nightmare at the time created some of the best memories that we still talk about to this day.
The Fountain of Youth
I think we all find ourselves at times searching for those same types of experiences. The ones that will bring back the familiar feeling of freedom and youthful adventure. For me, membership of The Extraordinary Car Club has been like accessing a time machine. I’ve found new friends and created incredible new adventures and memories. There are, of course, an abundance of existing car clubs; and even more opportunities to part with your money for an organised tour that promises an experience to be remembered but doesn’t always deliver. The Extraordinary Car Club is not just different; it really is extraordinary. The remarkable approach and ethos towards creating adventure is unrivalled and can only be truly appreciated by those lucky enough to take part.
At South Downs Secure we firmly believe the experience our clients receive and the quality of our service should always remain our highest priority. So, being part of the Extraordinary Car Club is a perfect fit. We work tirelessly to align ourselves with the best partners our industry has to offer; and will always ensure our clients are in safe hands. When it comes to being part of something really special and creating memories The Extraordinary Car Club offers the perfect adventure for man and machine.
London to Cornwall
The latest offering from the Extraordinary Car Club was an epic summer road trip from London to Cornwall. There were only six places up for grabs, so the tour quickly sold out, and it’s easy to see why. As London started to rise on an early Friday morning, the trip began with a coffee in Chelsea Green. After this, the drivers set off heading for a pit stop at South Downs Secure to collect a couple of cars and enjoy a prepared breakfast. With the Beach Boys for a soundtrack and the cars loaded, we hit the road and headed West.
Despite the summer traffic, there was enough time to stop off and enjoy a personalised hamper for lunch. After this we continued on our way, enjoying the country roads on the last leg to Bude. We arrived just in time to take in the beautiful sunset from the private balcony of the hotel with a glass of champagne followed by the best local fish & chips and a few cold beers.
With the sun setting, we strolled down to the sand dunes for an evening around the fire pit. Glasses of rum, Cuban cigars, music and toasted marshmallows were the perfect accompaniment. Some even braved a swift dip in the ocean, the perfect way to end the day.
We began Saturday with a private surf lesson and 2-hour surf. The swell was amazing, and Sumerleaze bay offered waves for every ability. After an exhausting but incredible surf, we took lunch on the beach with the most amazing hot pasties and local cider, huge thanks to the guys from Big Blue Surf School for making sure we didn’t drown.
That evening we took in the stunning view once more from the balcony deck of the hotel. We enjoyed a few drinks, including the Cornish Mojito, then a short walk into town for dinner at one of the best local restaurants in the area, the Temple. The combination of modern, Cornish and seasonal dishes was spot on, and the atmosphere was lively and inviting, a fantastic way to round off our day by the sea.
After breakfast on Sunday morning, our route home was the beautiful coastal road from Bude to Bridgewater. Then we headed across to Glastonbury and up to Castle Combe for lunch at the famous Castle Inn. The coastal route was breathtaking with roads that seemed to morph into different worlds as we went from winding country lanes to open coastal roads high on the cliff and then traversing the mountain like passes of the Dunkery & Horner Nature Reserve.
After a morning of real driving and enjoying the cars, we welcomed the formidable sight of the Manor House & grounds in Castle Combe. Lunch was, of course, outstanding and lived up to expectations. Sitting around the table enjoying good food, good wine and even better company, musing over the escapades of the weekend, just made me want to sign up for the next adventure wherever it may take me.
The drive after lunch was different for everyone. We took our own directions to wherever we call home. As the sun set with a few miles to go, I found myself reflecting on the weekend. Of course, the cars were great, as were the hotels and the food. But above all, I enjoyed creating new memories and rediscovering the feeling of adventure. The Extraordinary Car Club has a magical ability to create the perfect recipe for a road trip and a truly extraordinary experience.
